How Do You Release Silicone From Silicone

Releasing Silicone from Silicone: What You Need to Know

Silicone-to-silicone applications—such as making two-part molds or casting silicone into cured silicone—are entirely possible, but they require the use of an appropriate release agent.

Standard mold releases won’t do the job. To prevent the two silicones from bonding, the release agent must be low or free of silicone oil, which can actually cause the materials to fuse together.

Recommended Silicone Release Solutions

At Reynolds Advanced Materials, we recommend the following reliable options for releasing silicone from silicone:

  • Mann Ease Release™ 200
This professional-grade release is specifically formulated for silicone rubber. Applied as a light mist, it preserves fine surface detail and is ideal for two-part molds and casting silicone into silicone.
  • DIY Option: Alcohol & Dish Soap
A simple blend of 2 parts isopropyl alcohol to 1 part dish soap can work effectively in certain applications. Great for quick tests or smaller projects.
  • Petroleum Jelly + Mineral Spirits
Petroleum jelly thinned with mineral spirits can be brushed on in a thin, even layer. Be sure to minimize visible brush strokes for a cleaner mold surface.

Always Test First

Before committing to a full-scale mold, always perform a small-scale test. Different silicone formulations may respond differently, and testing helps ensure successful mold release without surprises.
