From Iron Wind Studios:

We made a decision that we wanted to open our own business. Ken being involved in many different aspects of the game industry most of his life we decided that we would going into what he had a large knowledge base of. We started Iron Wind Studios, LLC a game design studio; with our goal being to create fun, easy to play tabletop games. Being a fan of both models and miniatures games, we wanted to bring some of our ideas to life.

We started with developing a set of generic rules to be able to use any miniatures you may own regardless of the brand; then a set of vehicle design rules to go with it. We then started to make some of the vehicles as models from our vehicle design rules. We had access to a 3D printer and thought that would be the way to go for our proto types. We have a very talented friend that we were able to hire to make 3D models that we could use for the printer. Originally, we had a person outside of our studio create the molds for our first vehicle, but the molds were not the best and lacked the detail that we wanted. At that point we decided to begin mold making and casting in house, this way we could keep tighter control on the QA of the models.

We contacted Reynolds Advanced Materials in Tempe AZ for our molding and casting supplies. The mold making material from Smooth-On is great for capturing fine details and is easy to work with. The detail that comes in the molds is great and we have had several people comment on how clean the models are.

Special Thanks to Aaron and Niki at Reynolds Advanced Materials in Tempe AZ, they took the time to walk us through the processes involved and didn’t mind answering our seemingly countless questions, and any help we needed as we proceeded. If it were not for the endless help of both Aaron and Niki, we probably would have given up on the casting side of our business.
